Thirty-One

I checked the couch where John had been and then remembered him saying he would go back to the bar. He better had because we were running out of time and I needed everyone to listen. Just as soon as Seth and I reached the bar, Dominic was up and in our faces.

“Is it true? Is she dead?”

It took me a moment, so much death in such a small amount of time, I was beginning to lose track of who had died. “Did you not hear the explosion? Yes, Willow is dead. If you don’t believe me, you’ll find her arm in the sink.” I pointed back to the lobby, hearing moans of shock and modest grief from the others.

“Why is it when someone dies, you happen to be nearby?”

“Why is it that no one is telling the truth of who they really are?”

Dominic stopped and puffed out his chest, snorting his disapproval of me. I brushed past him, deliberately knocking his arm, and went back behind the bar, keeping an eye on everyone’s movements and mannerisms. I had told them they were being dishonest, right there, out in the open and they all displayed signs of guilt. I played them at their own game and calmly took a pint glass from the back of the bar and held it out in front of me. I went to the first pump and began pouring myself a nice cold beer.

“Wait,” Mika piped up, “you told me not to drink vodka and now you’re drinking a beer?”

“I’m not drinking it, I’m pouring it,” I said, much to my own delight.

I looked around the bar at everyone who was left. John was consoling himself on one of the tables, unable to hide his shock at what he had seen and smelt. Seth was standing near the entrance under the shack-like roof of the bar, looking at me and nodding gently. Mika was sitting at the bar right in front of me, watching me pour the beer with some sense of misplaced wonder. She really didn’t seem with it at all.

Eleanor was at the far end of the bar, playing with her hair. I remembered what Seth had said about make-up and effects and wondered if Eleanor was really a younger female masquerading as an older one. No, I had to believe that Amanda was dead and not someone in the hotel as Seth believed. Connor was sitting in the middle of the bar, mumbling to himself, probably damning the moment he decided to accept the invitation. Dominic was leaning against the far wall with his arms crossed, staring at the floor.

I stopped pouring the beer and set it down in the middle of the bar.

“I’m going to tell you all a story, one I think you know all too well. Not only do you know this story, but you’re also characters within an arc that only you have the key to understanding. Its ending has not yet been played out but it had a beginning and a middle and every single one of you had supporting roles in its construction.
